California licenses vocational nurses through 167 approved programs. Public ones charge a median of $5,000 and passed 91.8% of their first-time candidates last year. Private ones charge $34,532 and passed 82.8%. Both figures come from the state board’s own tables, and nobody puts them side by side.
Across the 110 programs that publish both a tuition figure and a 2025 pass rate, the correlation between what a school charges and how many of its students pass is -0.42. That is a real negative relationship, not a strong one, and it does not mean an expensive school will fail you. It means price carries no information about quality here, which is the opposite of what a $34,532 price tag implies.

The public programs are not hiding. They are full. California’s public programs between them approve about 2,321 places a year against 10,710 at the private schools, which is why 86% of the state’s candidates sat the exam out of a private program last year. The choice most people actually face is not cheap against expensive. It is a place now against a place later, if one comes up at all.
